Everybody needs a little bit of bubbly in their life! Let's discover together the most famous sparkling wines made in Italy.
We love Italian bubbly
The Italian bubbles market is growing year after year. We love bubbles and we are very proud to export them worldwide. The generic word we use in Italy is "spumante." It means "sparkling wine." The key players in the family of Italian fizzanti wines are Prosecco, Lambrusco, Franciacorta, Asti Spumante, and Alta Langa. Let's get to know better the bubbly Italian family.
Prosecco
Prosecco is perhaps the most famous sparkling wine in Italy. It is the historic rival to French Champagne (it is a fight to the death!). Prosecco is sweeter than traditional Champagne. This wine is aromatic, fruity, and sparkling. It is produced in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The primary grape variety for prosecco production is glera, whose grapes must make up at least 85 percent of the total. Experts recommend consuming the most recent harvests. It is yellow, with a delicate aroma, and a peach flavor with hints of vanilla bean. The rosé variety comes from adding a touch of Pinot Noir that gives it a yellow peach and strawberry flavor. In the Conegliano area, there is an important sub-region called Valdobbiadene, which is considered the area that can provide the best grapes for making this wine. This is the finest Italian prosecco.
Metodo Classico
The best technique for making sparkling wine is the so-called "metodo classico." Basically, it corresponds to the méthode champenoise of Champagne. Italian wines made with the classic method are similar to Champagne or Cava. On the other hand, many producers who use the metodo classico use the same grape qualities used to make Champagne, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. One example is the magnificent Franciacorta DOCG. It is made in Lombardy from Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. It is the noblest of Italian sparkling wines.
Lambrusco
Lambrusco is a red wine from Emilia Romagna, produced using the Charmat method.
Asti Spumante DOCG
Made using Moscato grapes, Asti is one of the sweetest sparkling wines produced in Italy.
